Lomo Loco

So, you've downloaded an Instagram free app on your smartphone ever since you saw your friend's photos on Facebook looking so cool in a square format with that vintage look. You can't seem to get enough so you try the Hipstamatic app where it feels almost like taking a picture from a vintage film camera, only digital. Technology has indeed made our lives so much better. Being able to capture images digitally like the way they do it in film has indeed made life easier. But to lomography enthusiasts, nothing is more cooler than taking those shots the old-fashioned way.

Lomography is a kind of artistic photography wherein an analogue camera is used that produces photographs with  vibrant colors, deep saturation and vignette framing. More specifically, the Lomo L-CA from which it takes it's name, is a camera originally produced during the communist period in Russia. Lomography, though, is not limited to the L-CA camera only, as there are a variety of lomo cameras that you can choose from like the Holga, Diana, Colorsplash and Supersampler to name a few. Lomo enthusiasts, use different techniques such as automatic exposure, and relatively fast film speeds to take abstract looking photographs. Lomo users take a "shot-from-the-hip" attitude, that produces casual, off-centered pictures which is the charm that lomography is all about.

In the Philippines, there is a lomography community called Lomo Manila. This is a venue where members can share their photos, techniques and suppliers in lomo. They also mount exhibits and organize events for it's members, at the same time increasing awareness of their existence to new or curious lomo wannabes.

Zarah Gomez, a certified lomo enthusiast, shares with us a few of her beautiful shots. Zarah is an IT professional who loves to travel, which is a perfect combination to her lomo hobby. She captures these fantastic lomo shots from her trips here in the Philippines and from abroad.
